I got to agree with you. People give way to much credit to Gandalf's ring. I really only think it helped him keep going in his mortal body.

As for Glorfindel, he had been to Valinor and seen the Two Trees, and any of these elves who had seen the light were in both the "wraith" and "real" world. That's why Gandalf can see them, as well as Glorfindel. The question is: could Elrond see them? He's one of the "Light" elves, but he himself had never been to Valinor (until the end of the book).
