Saruman got corrupted and gave up the original mission for sure, but certainly was not enslaved. : There was no danger, the Nazgul were quite capable of protecting the Ring. Is it being suggested that there was a power in Middle-earth capable of storming the Barad-dur and taking the Ring? Why not? That's exactly what Gil-galad and Elendil and co. did a few years later!
