So I think Tolkien rethought the Ring to Numenor question, after writing the letter.I agree. Tolkien's letters have to be read with care, especialy the earliest ones. I would tend to trust Tolkien's opinions only in the letters written at end of his life. If you read some books of 'The History of ME' from Christopher Tolkien, you will see Tolkien has often changed his mind. Mordan
