: Nope, at least nut normal German, who knows what words these

: Latin, sort of bad cancer

"lob" is an old English word for "spider", so "Shelob" is just "she" + "lob" = "she spider". Tolkien was devising a "feminine" noun for English.

It was just reported on the news groups today that "kanker" is an actual German word for a type of spider derived from Greek, and that the feminine ending "-a" was used by the translator to transform the word into essentially a literal translation of "shelob". So, "kankra" just means "she spider".
