: I think Tolkien had definate racial undertones in his stories, but we also have to remember his world and the period he grew up. It's only recently, and I suspect primarily in the USA, that subtle or blatant racism has become unacceptable as a social norm.When people accuse Tolkien of being a racist, I have to wonder whether they have read the same books that I have. Where on earth is the evidence to support that view? On the other hand, I suppose some people see racism in everything.
