: What occurs over three days in the Appendix transpires over two days in the chapter. It's a fine hair to split, I suppose, but given Tolkien's description of the powers of the Rings in various letters, I'm inclined to believe he deliberately put the discrepancy in there -- I just cannot prove he did so. Or maybe there is some discussion of it in THE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH, but I haven't checked to see.Michael, Hold it right there. If I remember from what Tolkien said about Lothlorien in LoTR, I remember he mentioned that the Fellowship "spent some days in Lothlorien, as far as they could tell or remember." I think this implies that because of the magic that Galadriel wielded with Nenya, anyone who goes into Lothlorien will have difficulty keeping track of time. Because of this, I'm not surprised that Samwise mentioned he could only remember a few days in that truly enchanted place.
