Was it a part of himself or another evil spirit? Did Werewolves, Wargs, and Dragons multiply on their own like Orcs? What do you think?: Cyberlock I'll just give you my theory on the genesis of Trolls. Preamble - a couple of difficulties: Morgoth could not create rational beings (trolls were a little dim but I think still qualify under this criterion). The earlier breeds of troll could be turned to stone. Now Treebeard said Trolls were made in mockery of Ents. Tolkien, in a letter, says that Trebeard may not have known the truth about this but gives no other explanation; so Treebee's theory remains the only one we have. The physical make up of the Ents was a little - shall we say "Woody." Therefore if you replace the lignocellulose of wood with silica you get a body of stone! Now with Morgoth's abilities and malice you torture and warp a few Ents for an eon or two - add the silica and "Hey presto!" one batch of (not very instant) Trolls.
