At a recent Star Wars Convention, Warwick Davis (who played Willow in the film of the same name) mentioned that he auditioned for the part of Gimli but he didn't get it. According to Davis, the part has gone to Timothy Spall, a British character actor of normal stature. The same special effects that are to be used to shrink the 'Hobbit' actors will be used to shrink Spall to Dwarf size.: I just thought you might be interested...
If the part has gone to Spall, I think it is the right actor, he is a good acotr, and starred in one of my favourite programs Auf Wiedershen Pet as Barry the Brummie.
