: : I was just curious. Did Tolkien ever write/publish a : : complete/draft/incomplete verse version of the lay of Beren : : and Luthien?: I believe I did see one in the Book of Lost Tales Two, but I'm : not sure (I don't own the book). You'll have to wait until : Michael's on the board, he'll know. But I am pretty sure there : was at least a longer version, in verse, than what appeared in : A Knife in the Dark, in the FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. The longest, most complete version of the lay was published in THE LAYS OF BELERIAND, Volume III of THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH. It comes to more than 4200 lines, but is nonetheless incomplete. "The Tale of Tinuviel" appeared in THE BOOK OF LOST TALES, Part Two, but it's a prose work, not a poem.
