: : : I was just curious. Did Tolkien ever write/publish a : : : complete/draft/incomplete verse version of the lay of Beren : : : and Luthien?: : I believe I did see one in the Book of Lost Tales Two, but I'm : : not sure (I don't own the book). You'll have to wait until : : Michael's on the board, he'll know. But I am pretty sure there : : was at least a longer version, in verse, than what appeared in : : A Knife in the Dark, in the FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING. : The longest, most complete version of the lay was published in THE LAYS OF BELERIAND, Volume III of THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH. It comes to more than 4200 lines, but is nonetheless incomplete. : "The Tale of Tinuviel" appeared in THE BOOK OF LOST TALES, Part Two, but it's a prose work, not a poem. I knew it was one of the books in the History of Middle-earth early on, thanks for the correction. Jon
