: This might be derived from LOTR, but the only details of Sauron's battle with Gil-galad and Elendil were published in THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH.

As far as I am aware Crawford (and his brother?) wrote the Isildur novel before the publication of Unfinished Tales or any of the HoMe. They had to rely on what is in the LOTR and The Silmarillion - which is not a lot.

It's not Tolkien nor particularly well written (I confess I didn't finish it). But the big problem with it is that the progress of the War of the Last Alliance it describes it quite different to that revelaed in "The Disaster of the Gladden Fields" in UT.

E.g. In the novel the retaking of Minas Ithil is not until late in the War, but in UT it clearly happened early as Isildur based his younger two sons (Aratan & Ciryon) there during the war.
