: I was wondering if Tolkien ever stated how many balrog's there were in middle earth. And since they were maia, how could they have been killed (what happened when they were killed)? The only ones I know about for certain were the balrog of Khazad-dum, Gothmog lord of the balrogs, and the balrog that ecthelion faced.. There were obviously more, but does anyone know if tolkien ever says how many more?In a late decision Tolkien decided there were only ever seven Balrogs. However that change was never written back into the Silmarillion story. The published Silmarillion requires a large number of Balrogs. Seventy maybe, but not seven.
