I'm afraid I have to dissent with the majority opinion here. My impression was that Caradhras was not at all influenced by any servant of Morgoth -- but more likely the primeval power of Morgoth himself, as in the Morgoth's Ring analogy. In essence, it is as any mountain, simply exceptionally malevolent as a region because of natural Morgothian influence. No active spirit, simply myths. Even Elves have myths.

So why did the events that the Fellowship went through seem so strange? I believe that it is fate. The Fellowship was not _meant_ to go through the Redhorn Pass. They must instead strive for an even more hostile route: through Moria. There are many fated events in Middle-earth -- this one was even more powerful due to the Caradhras myth, effectively causing the Fellowship to abandon all thoughts of passing that way.
