Tolkien was unimpressed by early Disney features. He never seems to have gone back and watched their later efforts. It was his choice to like or dislike Disney.

Personally, I enjoy the Disney animation and story adaptations and have long wished Disney would do a LOTR film. But rumor has it that Tolkien's will forbade that. I've been told that rumor is utter nonsense since Tolkien sold the film rights during his lifetime.

Certainly the Tolkien Estate has no control over who can do the films, but Miramax did pull out of the deal for some unexplained reason.
