: There were only two Palantiri left after Elrond departed, of which only one could really be used, though Tolkien says somewhere that a strong mind could force Denethor's stone to show something other than the burning hands.

In UT it stated that Elessar eventually returned the Orthanc-Stone to Isengard. Which means that he, at least, must have been able to use the Anor-Stone to communicate with Isengard (personally I would have though it more sensible to have one palantir in the North and one in the South).

The locations of the seven palantir at the Third Age:

The four southern stones:
The Master-Stone of Osgiliath lost into the Anduin
The Ithil-Stone in the Barad-dur (subsequently destroyed)
The Anor-Stone in Minas Tirith
The Orthanc-Stone in Aragorn's possession

The three northern stones:
The Annuminas-Stone and the Sul-Stone lost in the Bay of Forochel
The Elostirion-Stone in the tower Elostirion upon the Emyn Beraid (subsequently taken West by Elrond)

There was also the eighth, super-master Stone, in Avallone on Tol Eressea.

P.S. Any thoughts on who made the palantiri? I know The Silmarillion hints that Feanor may have made them. But there are good reasons for thinking he didn't? Any thoughts?
