: : hurling rocks at their heads. : Just quickly glancing at THE HOBBIT I see that Tolkien says there were knives, sticks, and stones. I don't believe he says any spiders were killed specifically by stones. But the stones could certainly have been annoyances. Also, stones CAN be deadly weapons.
slings, slings were used as a hunting weapons by all primitive cultures that I can think off, as well as for weapons of war by the romans. caesar relates how one of his centurions had sixty-odd holes from slingshots after a battle, if it could penetrate a roman scutum or kill a fully armed legionary, it could kill a spider even a giant one.
