: Because of a thread at theonering.net message board concearning the hair colour of the Elves, I stumbled upon the family tree of the Quendi at the Encyclopedia of Arda. This tree divides from the Quendi into two branches; Avari and Eldar, and continues to divide the Eldar into Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri. So far so good, but then the Teleri becomes Nandor, Lindar and Sindar and finally the Nandor divides into the Silvan and Laiquendi. In my world the Silvan and the Green-elves belonged to the Avari and not to the Eldar branch. The wood-elves belonged to the Moriquendi, the Elves who didn't make the journey from Quiviénen to Valinor.

Look at the chart in the Silmarillion of the Elves. The Calaquendi are those Elves who actually went to Valinor. Moriquendi are those who didn't make it, including the Sindar. The Umanyar are those of the Eldar (Sindar and Nandor) who didn't get to Valinor. Them and the Avari make the Moriquendi. The Laiquendi are definitely Nandorin, as their lord Denethor was the son of Lenwe, who led the Nandor. The Silvan Elves were probably a mixture of Nandor and Avari

: PS. And was the Noldor of the Houses (families) of Finarfin and Fingolfin mostly fair-haired? DS.

Fingolfin was dark-haired, I think, since Tolkien said that all the Noldor were dark-haired except the house of Finarfin. Although I think Idril might have been blond, I'm not sure.
