Hm.The armor styles described in THE LORD OF THE RINGS could fit into a period of about 1500 years, from around the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE, actually. Tolkien used very generic language in describing many things about Middle-earth, except for the stirrups (these are a relatively late development). I've been told, but have no way of confirming, that the weapons for the movie are realistic in appearance and not artistically fanciful. I would hope that a variety of weapon styles are employed, however, as that would add to the multi-cultural "realism" of the films' portrayal of Tolkien's world.
