: Faramir's men were engaging in guerilla warfare. Heavy armors would have been a distinct disadvantage for them, and I believe Tolkien eschewed describing armor for them for that reason.Yes, but I was talking about the Dunadan Rangers of the north. Faramir's men may well have been largely unarmoured. Also there would be many occasions when the northern Rangers would have operated unarmoured - which I covered earlier by saying "Armour when appropriate." Certainly Halbarad's troop seem to be likely to have been wearing armour of some kind, after all they were wearing helmets and two of their companions were expressly described as wearing body armour. : Their tactics need not be based directly on modern warfare techniques, however. Classical (and perhaps medieval) writers record ambushes very similar to that set up by Faramir. I know that Roman cohorts were wiped out by the Celts of Britain in this way on more than one occasion. It all depends on what they were doing operationally. if they were harassing the enemy's communications, making hit and run raids etc. I would expect them to be unarmoured. If they were setting out for a full scale pitched battle where secrecy and mobility are less important it would be a foolish man who spurned some form of protection.
