: : : I'm not positive, but I think it was called the "Battle Under
: : Stars".

: : No, Dagor-nuin-Giliath was the second battle. I'll keep looking
: : for the first one (I don't know either), but i'm sure one of
: : the experts will beat me to it.

: That battle was never given a name. It was a Sindarin battle and the names appear to have been given by the Noldor.

: We could refer to it as the Battle of East Beleriand, I suppose.

Hmmm. I an loathe to question you on a straight factual qustion, but as I recollect it the first battle of Beleriand was the Battle under the Stars, the second was the one right after Feanor dropped anchor and went right after Morgoth.

Anyway, as I recollect the first battle, it was actuallt a huge pincer, with an orc army attacking Beleriand on either side of Doriath. As the name implies, if was fought before the rising of the Sun and the Moon and therefore before the arrival of the rebellious Noldor.

In a sense there were technically two separate battles but I think to overall campaign was referred to as the battle under the stars.

It's been quite a while since I read that section of the Silmarillion so I apologize in advnace if I got it all wrong.
