I agree with the comments about Brooks being derivative with the Shannara series - actually I just read the first one. It was such a blatant ripoff of Tolkien that I never read the others. (His Magic Kingdom series is fun, though.) Tolkien is my favorite and always will be the master. Nothing can really compare. However, others have mentioned Ursula Le Guin - you can't go wrong with any of her books. One trilogy I highly recommend is by Patricia A. McKillip, called The RiddleMaster of Hed. (Published recently in one volume but originally three books: The RiddleMaster of Hed, Heir of Sea and Fire, and Harpist in the Wind.) She is a very lyrical writer in my opinion, and this trilogy was unlike any fantasy series I'd read before with some interesting ideas and concepts. I really loved it.
