: Chalk up another vote for Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea books. Although these books skew young, they are well-written; and writing quality is something I take into account when praising a book. Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks and Donaldson just can't write. It's not coincidence, folks, that Tolkien was a professor of Old and Middle English literature and linguistics. Nor is it coincidence that in addition to writing fantasy, Ms. Le Guin has published volumes of poetry and collections of literary short stories (her work has appeared in the prestigious, annual collection, Best American Short Stories). In short, Tolkien and Le Guin are literary writers. Jordan, Brooks, etc. are pop fiction churners.: David I cannot wouch for Brooks, but I like Jordan (for the reasons stated above)- if you label all writers that you do not like "churners of pop fiction" what does that tell about you???
