For me Denethor is the most interesting charater of LotR. Like you say he very notably does not fall, but goes mad rather. 'the pyre of Denethor' is a great piece of tragedy. How easy is it not to recognize Denethor? No doubt he'd use the ring if he had it, but he was never conquered by Sauron like Saruman was.

I always wondered if there was any contact between Orthanc and Minas Tirith through the palantiri. Tolkien speculates that indeed there was such contact and that Sauron would not be able to interrupt such communication with the Ithil-stone. Oh to know what passed between Denethor and the traitor in orthanc.
