Possibly they [orcs and men] even interbred and forgot their origins. This would help account for traits such as senseless vandalism, pointless destruction of nature, rapists and muggers which mark the negative sides of humanity today.

JRRT always refered to such behavior as "orcish," "the orcish mob," etc., though not in the sense of an alleged genetic link, but because he used orcs as representatives of certain aspects of our natures, just as elves were abstracted from our creative sides. (see _Letters_)
