: I'm taking a poll of my own, and I was wondering why and how long ago each of you read the THE HOBBIT and/or LORD OF THE RINGS and/or THE SILMARILLION.: Witch book(s) did you read first: : Why did you read it: : What year was it or are you still reading it: : I originally read The Hobbit about one and a half years ago, because I had seen some of Tolkien's pictures and I love art (as long it is clean, if you know what I mean) so I wanted to read the book so I could let my imagination go wild. Then after I read The Hobbit I wanted more, so I read the Lord of the Rings and I am now in the middle of The Silmarillion. : I hope this is easier. 1. I read LOTR first. 2. I got into sci/fi as a genre at 15 yrs and eventually graduated to Tolkien when I started university. 3. 1979 (I was 20). I bought all his books but only read LOTR then. Liked it a lot, I've NO idea why I didn't read the others at the time. Came to AICN 6 months ago, a link to another LOTR movie site said "Great article from Michael". Loved Suite 101, and found the link to Xenite there. The White Council I read about in a talkback from Goodgulf. I thought him one of the very best posters at AICN. So in a roundabout way I followed him here. I've spent the last month reading every post in the archives. And this is my first post! :-D This is longwinded but back to your poll Sam. This summer I reread LOTR for the first time. Having in the meantime read quite a few other fantasy writers, I was bowled over by how much richer Tolkien's world was. I cried like a baby at The Grey Havens. And read the appendixes for the first time. Linguistic pageturners! Read The Hobbit and loved it, and The Silmarillion in August. That was awesome! I love this board and promise to be briefer in later posts. Peace, Ulmo
