: : I'm taking a poll of my own, and I was wondering why and how long ago each of you read the THE HOBBIT and/or LORD OF THE RINGS and/or THE SILMARILLION.

: : Witch book(s) did you read first:

: : Why did you read it:

: : What year was it or are you still reading it:

: : I originally read The Hobbit about one and a half years ago, because I had seen some of Tolkien's pictures and I love art (as long it is clean, if you know what I mean) so I wanted to read the book so I could let my imagination go wild. Then after I read The Hobbit I wanted more, so I read the Lord of the Rings and I am now in the middle of The Silmarillion.
: : I hope this is easier.

: When I was young (don't remember exactly when), my father read The Hobbit to me as a bed-time story. When I was ten (1991), he got me the LotR and I started reading them. My best friend got me The Silmarillion for my twelfth birthday, but I was expecting something similar to LotR, so I put it down and didn't read it until I was 14 (ironically, Sil is now my favorite). I reread all five books at least once every year. More often, I read a particular chapter or two that I just feel like reading.

First read The Hobbit when I was 12 ('82). Then I liked it so much that I read it again...then got The Lord of the Rings and read that twice. After that I knew nothing of The Silmarillion until I saw it in a book-store when I was 16 ('86)...read it once and then read the others again.

I then had a long period where I read nothing of Tolkien's until earlier this year when I found this cool web site: Xenite.org...so I lurked and posted for a while and then read LOTR again and am currently ingaged in reading SIL again.

(sorry about the incoherent rambling;) )
