I first read The Hobbit back around '79. LOTR at around '80. I've never reread The Hobbit, although I have reread LOTR several times. Shame on me, I've owned several copies of the Sil, but never read it all the way through. I pick pieces out and read them, Beren and Luthien springs to mind. I've never really felt the urge to delve into anything further than what Tolkien himself published concerning Middle Earth, and although I think Christopher has done a massive job and I salute him, I like to stick with the original as much as I can. I like not knowing everything. I like the apparant incongruities like the sign over Moria's door and the large question marks about races and societies. It's a fertile field for the imagination. Why did I read them? I was hardcore bookworm in my youth, something I sadly no longer have time for. Before I was twelve I had read some pretty heavy stuff. Along with tons of fluff fiction I was reading Oscar Wilde, Samuel Clemens, Isaac Asimov and on. Tolkien got scooped up in my eager arms like everybody else. : I'm taking a poll of my own, and I was wondering why and how long ago each of you read the THE HOBBIT and/or LORD OF THE RINGS and/or THE SILMARILLION.
: Witch book(s) did you read first: : Why did you read it: : What year was it or are you still reading it: : I originally read The Hobbit about one and a half years ago, because I had seen some of Tolkien's pictures and I love art (as long it is clean, if you know what I mean) so I wanted to read the book so I could let my imagination go wild. Then after I read The Hobbit I wanted more, so I read the Lord of the Rings and I am now in the middle of The Silmarillion. : I hope this is easier.
