I recommend revisiting "Leaf by Niggle" if you've only read it the once. I, too, felt that it was very un-Tolkien-like the first time that I read it. I didn't revisit for at least a decade. When I finally did, I was taken aback by it' elegance and eloquence. Now I rank it as my favorite short story and (for my money) the most perfect short story that I have encountered.Also worth a look are his translations of "Pearl" and "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight."
