: I'm taking a poll of my own, and I was wondering why and how long ago each of you read the THE HOBBIT and/or LORD OF THE RINGS and/or THE SILMARILLION. I originally read The Hobbit about one and a half years ago, because I had seen some of Tolkien's pictures and I love art (as long it is clean, if you know what I mean) so I wanted to read the book so I could let my imagination go wild. Then after I read The Hobbit I wanted more, so I read the Lord of the Rings and I am now in the middle of The Silmarillion.

24 years ago. I was forteen, and a freshman in highshool. I was into the Narnian Chronicals by CS Lewis, and made a pact with a boy that if he would read the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe that I would read the Hobbit. The rest, as they say, is history. I read the Silmarillion the year it came out. I don't care for it much -- too dry -- but it was good in that I couldn't get enough of Tolkein and it gave me a good deal of the back story.
