: I'm taking a poll of my own, and I was wondering why and how long ago each of you read the THE HOBBIT and/or LORD OF THE RINGS and/or THE SILMARILLION. I originally read The Hobbit about one and a half years ago, because I had seen some of Tolkien's pictures and I love art (as long it is clean, if you know what I mean) so I wanted to read the book so I could let my imagination go wild. Then after I read The Hobbit I wanted more, so I read the Lord of the Rings and I am now in the middle of The Silmarillion. Long long ago, '74 I think, Smaug picked up The Hobbit for the first time, he enjoyed it so much (despite the unhappy ending) that he went straight onto The Lord of the Rings which he *devoured* again and again until The Silmarillion came out. Truth to tell Smaug was dissapointed, too short, not enough substance, no good eating, worse was to follow with Unfinished Tales which was, by it's very nature, unsatisfying. Real Life intruded, as it tends to in your tweens, and Smaug didn't pick up Tolkien again until a couple of years ago.
