: Well, Tolkien intended this to be part of the great tragedy of the Elves. They were immortal but fated to fade as Men rose to the ascendant. They are preserved and made whole again in Aman, the Blessed Realm.

This was Tolkien's reasoning (I suppose) as to why Men see elves as fragile & endangered, because the few that are left today are almost completely faded and would be as we think when we think of "elfs"
