Speaking of wars, is there any truth that Tolkien had written the first manuscript of LOTR before World War II? The way I understand what I read is that he had to destroy the manuscript when England entered the war. He was afraid that if they lost, he would be put to death for his writings. When you look at it, there are many similarities between Sauron and his forces and the axis. This is just what I read at a site on the net, there may be no truth to it (keep in mind that I haven't read Tolkien's letters or much biographic stuff).
