: If we are to assume that Middle-Earth corresponds to our world : then the Great Journey would have taken place along a route : that roughly goes from Moscow to Iceland. The geographical : references above correspond in Middle-Earth to Harad and areas : southwards. My point was that lions north of the Alps (indeed : far north) would be somewhat strange.I'm not sure about the correlation you place between Cuivienie and Moscow, but the Elves surely had many opportunities to learn about lions and other animals, both in Middle-earth and Aman. In fact, the Elves settled in a very equatorial latitude in Aman, so lions would have been quite comfortable there, as well as in the lands north of Eldamar. Cirdan's mariners also apparently did some travelling around Middle-earth, although the hints toward this activity are few and obscure. But given the vast expanse of territory covered by the Numenoreans and Dwarves, with whom the Elves had extended contact, knowledge of lions could have reached them from all parts of Middle-earth if they didn't encounter them previously in their own journeys.
