: What (or who) could intimidate a giant?Well, Treebeard was wise but not all-knowing. The Ents preserved ancient lore apparently learned from the Elves long before the whole world was known. In THE HOBBIT Gandalf says that one rumor about Beorn's origin is that he was descended from the "ancient bears of the mountains that lived there before the giants came". This implies the giants weren't native to the Misty Mountains, and hence could have arrived there after the Ents became isolated. Just a thought.
