: : It's a long time since I read Narnia, but wasn't there : : something called Ettenmoor there too?: Ettinsmoor was the territory north of the River Shribble and south of Harfang near the Ruined City. I don't know if that's where the White Witch's Ettins come from or not. : Ettin (etten) has a similar Anglo-Saxon origin to Ent. But I think here Tolkien was using the word in it's original meaning: ie a man-like creature of giant size. So in this particular case I would imagine the "Ettins" in question were trolls. Stands to reason, English professers know word roots. Enttenmoors was a land inhabited by Giants. Seanith
