: I was thinking about how impportant it was that Smaug and the Balrog of Moria were destroyed before The War of the Ring; both as a result of Gandalf. If Smaug had lived to the War of the Ring Erebor would not be an abode of the Dwarves, but a strategic point for Sauron to attack Thranduil with Smaug leading his armies. And, it makes sense that the Balrog of Moria, may have been waiting on Sauron's orders to lead the attack on Lorien. In either case things would have been quite hopeless for Lorien and Mirkwood. Just another point of Gandalf's importance. : What do you think?I don't think the Balrog would have marched on Lorien just because sauron wanted him to, both he and sauron were Maia and Sauron had no authority over him.
