With respect to the strengh of Sauron as opposed to the other Maiar Servants of Morgoth the Foul, It is debabale whether he was the preemement amoung them.True because he could adopt many guises he had greater freedom of independant action hence his posting to Tol Sirion at its Fall.Yet I think that Fangorn is incorrect in that Sauron in the First Age was A General of Morgoths Armies. His role was as Leutenant and an Aide deCamp. The Battle commander was of course GOTHMAG LORD OF THE BALROGS AND HIGH CAPTAIN OF ANGBAND IN THE SILMARILLION IT IS GOTHMOG WHO IS ALWAYS REFERED TO LEADING MORGOTH'S ARMIES IN THE GREAT BATTLE'S NOT SAURON Though of course the Balrog in Moria would have known of Sauron and obayed under Morgoth and Gothmog recognising the Third or at least Joint Second Power ruling within Angband. As for Smaug the Golden the question of whether the relationship would have been as a Servant of Sauron is problematic. It is far more likely that Smaung's role would have followed that of Shelob that of Allies rather then servant.
