: With respect to the strengh of Sauron as opposed to the other Maiar Servants of Morgoth the Foul, It is debabale whether he was the preemement amoung them.True because he could adopt many guises he had greater freedom of independant action hence his posting to Tol Sirion at its Fall.: Yet I think that Fangorn is incorrect in that Sauron in the First Age was A General of Morgoths Armies. His role was as Leutenant and an Aide deCamp. I apologise for the misinformation. Yet it clearly states in The Silmarillion that Sauron was the greatest of Melkors servants: "Among those of his [Melkor's] servants that have names the greatest was that spirit whom the Eldar called Sauron..." (From Valaquenta) Added to this is the fact that he is Commander of Angband. Morgoth wasn't going to let any old Joe take charge of his secondary lair, as it were, especially since Angband was placed specifically to defend an attack from Aman. I don't see how Sauron's preeminance over Morgoth's other servants is debatable. The above facts give him more authority, even than Gothmog etc.
