In "Unfinished Tales" it is described that the palantíri had poles, and that they were to be placed "upright" with the nether pole pointing towards the earths center. That makes perfectly sence in a round world as we know in the Third Age, but the palantiri was made before the First Age of the Sun ... and more to the point before the downfall of Numenor and "The world made round". If you live in a flat world, then how can you point a "nether pole" on a stone towards the earts center? Can anyone explain???
