If so, had something changed since the First Age when everyone had to (or at least thought they had to) go to the great length of getting their pleas for help back West by means of a mariner physically travelling there?Things were indeed different in the first age; Aman was shut against the elves, and "not even the echo" of their lamentation would reach the Valar, as was said in the Doom of Mandos. (That is, untill Ëarlendil got there through the power of a Silmaril.)
