: : : A recent photo of Elijah Wood as Frodo reveals he has HUGE,
: : : very non-hobbit-like feet. This incredible blunder reminds
: : : me of the travesties perpetrated on us by the Brothers'
: : : Hildebrandt. I'm beginning to see why Tolkien Enterprises
: : : didn't want to pick up my book (although it would not have
: : : addressed either Elf Ears or Hobbit Feet).

: : : Ah well. I wasn't really expecting such a ridiculous
: : : blunder, but then, I've always said it's Jackson's story to
: : : tell. :)

: : Two points:

: : 1) The feet didn't look *HUGE* to me. I like them quite a lot.

: [snip]

: The point is that Tolkien's hobbits don't have big feet.

: : 2) What did that reference about your book mean? Are you saying
: : Tolkien Enterprises has poor taste? Just wondering...

: They told my agent they didn't want to publish my Middle-earth history book because they were afraid it would point out the flaws in the movie. In fact, the book doesn't even approach the areas where the movie is going to radically depart from Tolkien (except for giving Arwen Glorfindel's role on the road, but that's a relatively minor incident with far fewer implications than dropping Bombadil). But I can understand why they would be concerned about publishing and promoting a book which has a clearer picture of Tolkien's world than these movies will portray.

It's just like kings and rulers once objected people to learn how to read, or to learn at all, for that matter. They want to keep the audience ignorant, so they can keep thier power-base ;)
