: So we're going to be saddled with a pseudo-medieval Middle-earth that has Bigfooted hobbits. Big deal. "Ever After" isn't set in China (and even has lousy British accents coming from allegedly French people), and it's an enjoyable interpretation of the Cinderella fairy-tale nonetheless. I've said in the past I would welcome an all African cast for a LORD OF THE RINGS adaptation, even one that portrayed Middle-earth as essentially African, with Pygmies for Dwarves and Tutsis for Elves.: Such a movie would not be faithful to Tolkien, but it would ensure that his story continues to live. That, I feel, is more important than the faithfulness to details. The idea is interesting, certainly! But by just taking an African caste and shooting in an African setting will never make it an African story. African culture, storytelling, songs, poetry, customs, etc are just so different that you would have to change so much that there would be little original Tolkien left.
