...Merry and Pippin had NOT been sent along by Elrond at the last minute? Aragorn ordered Boromir to protect the Hobbits, and that he did, giving his life for them. If Elrond had sent, say, his sons instead of Merry and Pippin, how do you think Tolkien should have handled Boromir's fall and subsequent atonement?There is, of course, no "right" answer, but I'm curious about how many different perspective people may have on this. I suspect he would have gone on to Minas Tirith and sacrificed himself somehow, but then his death would be less tragic.
