: At the end of the day Aragorn, Gimli, Frodo and Sam may well :have destroyed the ring (I'm sure Aragorn would have killed :Gollum as soon as they had gotten into Mordor. Gollum was just :to much of a liability and more importantly Aragorn knew it), :but they would have returned to the lands of the West in the :firm control of the leaderless enemy.

>>>But wait just a second. When Gandalf said Gollum still had a part to play, I don't think he was only referring to leading them through the secret entrance to Mordor. Yes and afterwards Aragorn would have killed him. But then they get up to Mount Doom, and suddenly Frodo no longer wants to destroy the Ring. (Remember In FoR, Frodo couldn't even throw it into the fire, and the fire wouldn't have hurt it anyway!) If Gollum would not have been there to take the Ring into the Fire, I do not want to think what would have happened. The importance of Gollum goes far beyond him leading them to Cirith Ungol; it was Gollum himself who completed the Quest!
