As usual, a very interesting column. But I have to wonder about the date you site: The War of the Ring having occurred in 4042 BCE, a mere thousand years before the Sumerians began stirring and building their cities roughly where Khand was. Very short time period for all of the renewed Gondor-Arnor and allies to disappear and for a major grographical rearrangement (unless all that was the result of the struggle with the emerging threat Tolkien was beginning to describe in "The New Shadow."

I'd figure say 10,000 years ago, giving enough time for a decent Golden Age. But that date, sounds a lot like some that are proposed for the Creation of the world by the likes of Bishop Ussher or the Judaic calendar.
