I think that it is possible that Bombadil is Middle Earth. . . the spirit of the land incarnate in a living creature. He is neither god or immortal but he is "Nature"; he is the life of the Land itself. This is view is somewhat supported and hinted at in The Council of Elrond: Glorfindel: "I think in the end, if all else is conquered, Bombadil will fall, Last as he was First." Galdor: "Power to defy our Enemy is not in him, unless such power is in the earth itself." Just an idea, but to me it makes sense. Most other "things and powers" in the universe have some sort of representation and/or immortal figure behind them. Bombadil, perhaps, is Middle Earth.
