I used to be like you, I used to want to know, but now I agree with Dave. I believe Tom to be a unique being, not elf, dwarf, hobbit, ent, man, ainu, etc. I believe this basically because he's unlike any character in the books. Rather than try to analyze him, I now try to appreciate his greatness. Tom experienced something that I don't think anyone in our world has ever accomplished, he lived life according to his OWN rules. At all times he lived his life the way he saw fit, you have to think about it to realize how different this is from our lives. Some have tried to be like this (Henry David Thoreau for example with his experiment at Walden Pond, I once wrote a critical paper on this), but in the end, they have failed. So appreciate him for his greatness, because you're really not going to get anywhere trying to classify him, because nothing's going to fit him.
