I believe you mean Karen Wynn Fonstad, who wrote THE ATLAS OF MIDDLE-EARTH (and its revised edition). Robert Foster wrote THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MIDDLE-EARTH, which is good but dated and now quite incomplete.

There is no currently up-to-date and reputable Tolkien companion. Doublas Anderson's ANNOTATED HOBBIT, however, is probably the definitive Hobbit commentary and I think it will be for a long time to come.
