: : Hello,
: : I haven't read either book yet and was wondering if I should read The Silmarillion first before reading the Lord Of the Rings. What's your opinion?

: : Thanks,
: : Tom

: Tom,

: My guess is that Michael would not be the expert he is today (he knows everything there is to know about Tolkien) had he tried to read the books in the order he now proposes, because he would have put the Silmarillion down 10 pages into it.

: You should read the books in the order they were published: first the Hobbit, then the Lord of the Rings, then Silmarillion. That way, you will get the works in least to most complicated, and will allow Tolkien to draw you in.

: I wish I were reading these for the 1st time. Enjoy.

: John D.
