I just finished Pat Murphy's new, futuristic remake of The Hobbit entitled (like the original) "There and Back Again," and I must concur with Michael and others on this board that it is a pretty entertaining read. Murphy does a very clever job of retelling the story in a sci-fi setting. My only regret I had was that she did not take a crack at recreating my favorite scene from The Hobbit, where Gandalf tells his story to Beorn in such a way as to gradually let on the fact that he is travelling with a dozen (or so) dwarves. That, to me, is the funniest part of the book.
